Autocross on Sunday at MIS. First time out, smallest tire in my class (215/60/15) and I was only 3 seconds behind the top car in my class on 275/45/18’s. It’s a barge full of roll, but God was it fun. Now I need that Hotchkiss suspension kit and 255’s all the way around.

This is what you need to do:
Those are 295’s on 10” wide T-Type style wheels.

I’d be VERY concerned about rub with 295’s
I think 255 is as physically big as you can go with stock suspension and steering gear in the front and 275 with a rolled lip in the back

Apparently this guy was running 295’s without a notched frame.

I’ve been told sticky tires can get you about 2 seconds. That plus more practice and you should be good

Yeah the ass end was all over the place and I was even losing traction on the straights when I went right foot down, not sure if it was because the rear wasn’t planted after the turn or just to little tire. On my last run I did a full drift around the 180. I was steering with my right foot most of the time.

Hey, glad you had fun! Car looked awesome, had a good look at it. See you at the next one.

I 100% agree with you. I had a 1981 Regal with 10 inch Mickeys and even they would rub occasionally, but that had no panhard bar. I assume the SS has a little better side-to-side control of the rear end beyond the control arms (kinda like a GN), but still...

STR 911 that was a little oversteery.

I’m not sure who had the more epic snap over steer event. You at the first turn at speed, or me going into brake box and almost running down spectators.

I’m also confused as to why I should run CAM-C (an utterly bullshit class in my opinion) when I could run C Prepared... I haven’t done anything to the suspension, just engine, transmission and cooling modifications...

You can run CAM, which is cool because it’s modded V8 cars, or SMS (Street Mod Street tire) which is kind of an “anything goes” for street cars with interiors not specifically built for AX. Things like high boost Subarus play there, but I ran there years ago with a turbo swapped Nissan. If your motor ever came in that bodystyle, you might be able to run ESP too, but I’m not sure.
CP is usually pretty serious race cars on full slicks (not just R-comps):

I was in the timing truck for your, uh, “exciting” finish. That was cool.

that “exciting” finish cost me my best time too. 44 and some small change
even though it was technically a DNF I crossed the timing light before I hit cones. So it’s a win in my book. ;)

I was in Corner 2 for the HS and cart heats. I swear some of the FiSTs were coming through on 2 wheels. I can see why non-ST Fiesta hatches are no longer allowed.

Yeah, my Dad drove home, he feels he’s “too old” to AX, but loves to drive my car. Your plate (and car, of course) kicks ass.

It’s almost annoying how fast those FiSTs are. They kicked my Mustang’s ass. I’m gonna blame driver skill.

I had massive traction issues as well. I think the cold day was hard on the torquey RWD cars.

Glad I could help.
I’m trying to figure out if 16inch S-10 wheels will work on mine and i can run 255/50/16 all the way around.

Can I ask where you got the 3v from?
DeWayneV8

I got that when I still lived near Chicago from a local salvage yard. It was very similar to the deals you see on ebay, $1500 shipped with a 30 day return policy. Can’t beat that for a 350 hp all aluminum V8!
Auto Financer

04/28/2015 at 18:09 | 0 |
350? What do you have on it
DeWayneV8
> Auto Financer
04/28/2015 at 22:38 | 0 |
Headers, a different air inlet tube (dictated mostly by packaging), and I tuned it on the dyno. Made 301 hp and 325 lb-ft to the wheels, so it’s making at least 350 hp. 3V’s were really corked up from the factory on the inlet and exhaust. They’ll make 340-350 at the wheels with cams.

I’m in Wisconsin, they don’t do safety inspections. I’ve seen Jeeps and brodozers driving around with a lot more tire sticking out.
Auto Financer

I have a tuner from bama and they support all that with unlimited tunes and have datalogging, what I need is a lift to put my headers on
crowmolly
> Tohru
04/29/2015 at 15:10 | 0 |
Gotcha.
He’s worried about rubbing, and bashing the lip is way worse than rubbing the inside of the wheel well or on the exhaust.
I’m guessing the trucks and Jeeps are lifted for adequate clearance; his Monte doesn’t have that.
DeWayneV8
> Auto Financer
04/29/2015 at 15:16 | 0 |
BAMA eh? I know Mike from quite a ways back. SCT was still new back then.
You don’t need a lift. I’ve done it many, many times without one.

If you pulled a “Jake - Pilot of the Murdersofa” and ran rear air shocks with the pressure all the way up you could probably get away with it in the rear.
295’s up front would be ridiculous.
crowmolly
> Tohru
04/29/2015 at 15:22 | 0 |
Yeah, there’s that. You can air shock it, or go full on ‘70s with extended shackles. You can make it “work” but I don’t think that’s what he wants and is pretty bad long-term.
295s up front would at least be cool to see.

Don’t fear the roll too much, it’s still all about corner weight management and overall grip.
The above car lobbed itself around like a schooner in high seas but still handles very well. I’m not pushing very hard in that video because it was extremely hot and I was eating the tires I’d have to drive home on, but you get to see the ROLL. Also how hard it was sticking ‘cause my seat frame was bending, didn’t realize that until actually just now.
